TODAY'S WORD FOR Friday, January 03, 2020:

To move quickly; to depart quickly; to flee.

Resist the devil, standing firm in the faith.
I Peter 5:9.

We are living in an evil world and we need to be aware of evil and be quick to flee from evil. In 2 Peter 2:22 the Apostle Paul urged his spiritual son Timothy to run from evil and also to pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

And the Apostle Peter in I Peter 5:8-9 told us that “Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith.”

Lions choose their prey from the weakest and smallest of a herd or the ones who are separated from the herd or the least alert. Satan is like a lion as he prowls around this earth because he looks for those who are weak, alone and helpless. Satan knows our every weakness and where we are most vulnerable to his temptations.

Some thirty years before writing this letter, Peter boasted that he would never disown Jesus (Matthew 26:33-35), but in his overconfident pride he failed to “be alert and of a sober mind” I Peter 5:8

According to John, the whole world is presently under Satan’s control (I John 5:19). But the good news is that in John 12:31 he tells us that Jesus has already defeated Satan.

Anyone who watches the news on TV or reads a newspaper will see how evil the world really is today. None of us is immune to temptation. Often the best thing to do is to steer clear of situations where we will be tempted to yield to Satan’s control. In other words, learn to RUN away from temptation. We can be prepared to resist temptation by having a strong faith in God based on the Bible and strengthened through prayer. When we are firmly grounded in our faith we will know to turn flee when we are tempted by Satan.

Our memory verse for this week is found in Proverbs 11:25.

The generous soul will be made rich. And he who waters will also be watered himself.

Dear God, there are so many temptations out in our world today. Help us to watch and pray so that we will not fall. Give us strength to run from evil and run for wisdom, guidance and shelter.
